metamerism
The way in which two color samples can look the same in one lighting condition but different in another lighting condition. It can also refer to a single color sample that changes color under different lighting conditions.

mezzotint
A fine art, etching process that produces a “burred” surface-a line conversion of a photo that imitates a mezzotint effect.

microbanding
The appearance of density variation between adjacent scan lines in an otherwise uniform pattern.

midtones
colors or graylevels of intermediate value (the range from 25% to 75% value).

MIPS
Abbreviation for Million Instructions Per Second - Also the name of a manufacturer of CPUs.

MIRC ink
‘Magnetic’ ink, ink with iron particles that can be magnetized, used for check printing.

MIS
Abbreviation for Management of Information Services”: the designation for the field of computer solutions internal to an organization.

MIME
Abbreviation for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. MIME is a standard that allows the embedding of arbitrary documents and other binary data of known types (images, sound, video, and so on) into e-mail handled by ordinary Internet electronic mail interchange protocols.

mini web
Type of web press that is used to print brochures, newsletters, and other products whose flat trim size is typically 11 by 17 inch. Mini Webs use rolls that are 11 to 14 inches wide.

MODEM
Abbreviation for Modulator-Demodulator, a device that permits the transmission of computer data over telephone lines.

moiré
A repetitive interference pattern. In printing, it can be caused by interference between the dot patterns of the different colors or by interference between a pattern in the data being printed and the screened dots. In scanning, moiré can be caused by interference between the grid of the scanner CCDs and patterns in the original that is being scanned.

monochromatic
Having or being of one color. Having a single wavelength. Laser beams have a narrow frequency range that is very nearly monochromatic.

monospacing
Letterspacing that is the same for all characters regardless of their shape or width. Courier is an example of a monospaced font.

montage
A single image made up of photographs or drawings.
