Mike, right on !! I use a combo of indesign and pitstop to "rebuild" and tweek many a pdf in my daily workflow (including adjusting an issue not addressed in the problem list ... bad layout or panel sizes : ) I am able to fix or adjust or re-layout almost anything coming at me without having to go back to the client (who wouldn't be able to fix it anyways LOL) and keep even the rushest job on schedule. Just think of Word or publisher's idea of a trifold brochure and you'll get the idea of what needs to be fixed. (color remapping from RGB to cmyk or pantone, panel sizing corrected for folding,. etc . Indesign can do most of it and pitstop can finish off what indesign can't do. amen !!

Thanks. very enlightening. Have just encountered some problems with PDFs from CS3 going into a 1 year old RIP.
Frustrating, but I guess once Print Engine is in place and relatively bug-free, some of these problems, [most of them?], will be left behind. Let's hope.

One other re-fry that works like a charm is to place the PDF into InDesign then export it as PDF. Doing this you can map spot colors to other spots (using Ink Manager) or even process colors and you can embed fonts that were not embedded in the original PDF without reflow or characters changing. You can also change the page size or add bleed easily this way.
